Light Gun Zero Plus wireless light gun demo unit spotted at TGS

October 9, 2008 – 8:43 am
Filed under: GamingWe spotted this demo light gun on the floor of TGS2008. The cagey booth attendant wouldn't tell us if it will ever hit retail shelves, but the frankensteined (see the external batteries?) device was certainly working with a PS3 and projector here in Tokyo. We're all for some wireless light gun action, so bring it on, Light Gun Zero. That is, if you can. Oh, and if you can get rid of that unusual battery pack. October 9, 2008 – 8:43 am
Filed under: Digital Cameras, Peripherals, WirelessLate last month, Eye-Fi announced that its wares were finally supporting photo uploads to Apple's MobileMe and the AdoramaPix service, and now, we're seeing that its WiFi-enabled SD cards have a few more tricks up their sleeves. An Eye-Fi Manager update has opened up support for RSS feeds along with Twitter integration, enabling users to let their posse know when they've uploaded new photos for perusal. Additionally, the RSS support allows customers to "publish photos in a live real-time feed via RSS to the aggregator of their choice." Hope you're not a fan of post-processing.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: [Link]

Carcade lets you play your seedy neighborhood

October 9, 2008 – 8:43 am
Filed under: Gaming This isn't the first stab at an "in-car gaming system" we've seen, but it may be the most novel. Carcade! is an "augmented reality in-car videogame" designed by students at the Berlin University of the Arts. Using a webcam, the landscape is captured and incorporated into the game itself, letting you navigate the hellish urban environment that you call home with a little spacecraft just like you've always wanted to. The faster and more erratically your friend drives, the more difficult game play becomes -- we just wish we could play it on the window itself instead of a laptop. This would be just the thing for those cross-country road trips, though it might get a little dull while passing through the vast alkali plains of The Great American Desert. Watch the Carcade! road test after the break.[Via Edmunds] Continue reading Carcade lets you play your seedy neighborhoodRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

TechFaith hard at work on Android device, not saying who it’s for just yet

October 9, 2008 – 8:43 am
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Manufacturer TechFaith flexes some serious ODM muscle in its native China, slapping together phones for a variety of name brands -- including Open Handset Alliance member Motorola. It's a curious coincidence, then, that TechFaith is running its mouth right now about crafting an Android-powered device that it expects to be ready for end users sometime in early '09. For the moment, the company's official line is that it's "still in talks with several interested customers" and expects to make an announcement about which company will be lucky enough to silkscreen its logo onto TechFaith's hard work at the end of November. With Android being a bit of a hot commodity right now, we can totally see any number of companies engaged in a bidding war here -- but unless Moto has something ready to go, like, yesterday, it sure seems like working with TechFaith now to get ...

iriver SPINN hits the streets at last

October 8, 2008 – 9:55 am
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video It's been a long wait since we first saw iriver hint at the SPINN way back at CES in January, but the flash player is finally shipping -- just a few days late. Our full hands-on impressions are on the way, but there's no denying that iriver has caught our eye with this distinctive player. 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen, unique spin controls and that traditional iriver eye for design make this thing potentially worth the hefty $250 (4GB) and $290 (8GB) asking prices -- though we have a few issues with long-term usability we'll need to hash out. It'll be available at iriverinc.com, Amazon.com, J&R and B&H online stores, though iriver's seems to be the only one with it live just yet.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: [Link]

Audi confirms pure electric car, will likely be based on VW Up! concept

October 8, 2008 – 9:55 am
Filed under: Transportation With an electric MINI Cooper just around the bend, a Twin Drive hybrid Volkswagen landing in 2010 and Chevrolet's Volt rolling into showrooms in a matter of months, Audi's ten-year plan is looking a little awkward. Though we've yet to hear that it's actually speeding things up, Peter Schwarzenbauer, who sits on the management board at Ingolstadt, recently confirmed that the company would be offering "a pure electric car" sometime in the future. Additionally, rumors of it being based on the A1 were dashed, opening the door for speculation that it will instead be built around the VW Up! (Lupo) concept. Here's hoping we find our prior to 2018.[Via Autoblog]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: [Link]

Navigon’s 5100 max slips into FCC database

October 8, 2008 – 9:55 am
Filed under: GPS Details are understandably scarce at the moment, but Navigon is apparently taking its 1+ year old 5100 navigation unit to the max. The predictably titled 5100 max has reportedly just seen its way into the FCC's lair, and we're told that it'll feature a 4.3-inch display, Bluetooth, text-to-speech and lifetime traffic / Zagat ratings. As for price and availability? We'll have to wait for the official word from Navigon on those bits. In the meanwhile... Rockford or Chicago?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: [Link]

ASUS' Eee PC S101 gets hands-on treatment, release details

October 7, 2008 – 8:51 am
Filed under: Laptops Anxious to get your claws around an Eee PC that looks -- amazingly -- nothing like an Eee PC? Feast your eyes on the S101, which was recently toyed with by our brethren over at Engadget Chinese. We must say, this here piece of machinery looks mighty fine save for that not-at-all appealing brown coat, but we suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all. As for launch dates (pricing is still a mystery), we're hearing that the Asia-Pacific realm could see it as early as tomorrow, while Europe will get it in around a fortnight and North America sometime later this month. Oh, and if you're in that latter region, you better bite early -- just 1,000 of 'em will be made available here initially. Nikon announces Media Port UP300x head-mounted PMP

October 7, 2008 – 8:51 am
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video, Wearables Just when we were getting used to having most Nikon announcements thoroughly preceded by a flood of leaks, the company's managed to totally surprise us by introducing a new head-mounted display with PMP features -- and it actually looks pretty sweet. The WiFi-enabled 8GB Media Port UP UP300x has a .44-inch 640 x 480 screen that appears to be the equivalent of a 50-inch image viewed from about 10 feet away, and includes a motion sensor that allows media functions to be controlled through head movements. (There's also a "basic" 4GB UP300 that omits the motion control features.) Codec support is pretty slim, but there's a browser app and a new UP media store that allows for direct downloads. Two AA batteries will last for two hours of video or 270 minutes of audio, which should be enough time for you to look thoroughly ...

Reggie Fils-Aime denies Wii HD rumor

October 7, 2008 – 8:50 am
Filed under: GamingNintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime sat down with VentureBeat on the heels of last week's DSi announcement, and while he didn't drop any major bombshells, he did put the kibosh on those Wii HD rumors, saying that they were "pure rumor and speculation" and that Nintendo wouldn't show off upcoming models to devs as the rumors claimed. Reggie also downplayed the talk that Nintendo is going head to head against Apple, saying that Ninty's always "viewed ourselves as competing in a larger entertainment space." That's the end of that for now, we suppose -- but Reggie didn't close the door on either rumor entirely, and his closing comment that Nintendo's good fortunes "makes us the most paranoid people in the world"certainly keeps possibilities open. Elonex One t+ netbook gets the hands-on treatment

October 7, 2008 – 8:50 am
Filed under: Laptops Elonex' One t and slightly upgraded t+ netbooks are certainly an improvement over the original Elonex One but, as Plug In Blog's hands-on of the device shows, it still falls somewhat uncomfortably between the OLPC and a regular netbook. That said, for the £99 price tag (or less than $200), the site seems to think that the netbook will get the done job for its target audience: students, and even anyone else that's not looking to do much more than email and some basic web browsing. Anyone needing more than that, however, had best look elsewhere, especially considering that the netbook's underpowered and uncommon Ingenic XBurst processor will likely limit your software options beyond anything that doesn't come pre-installed. Acer Aspire One hacked into a UMPC for reasons unknown

October 6, 2008 – 9:56 am
Filed under: Handhelds, Laptops We know that there are those of you who have been asking -- quite insistently -- "What does it take to get an Acer Aspire One UMPC around here?" Apparently, it doesn't take much: pop out the screen, replace it with an 8.9-inch touchscreen kit, flip the lid 'round so the display sits on top, toss out the keyboard and screw it all back together again. The specimen pictured above is running Ubuntu on top of the Aspire's 1.6GHz Atom CPU with 1.5GB RAM and an 8GB SSD (and quite happily, we might add). Nintendo unveils Wii Speak channel for four-way voice chats

October 6, 2008 – 9:56 am
Filed under: Gaming, Peripherals Remember that Wii Speak microphone that Nintendo announced at E3 for Animal Crossing socialization, and then everyone promptly forgot about? Well, shuffled in with its other announcements yesterday, Nintendo announced the Wii Speak channel, that will allow for up to four people to voice chat directly without all that pesky fishing and digging and tea sipping and cute getting in the way. Unfortunately, literally nothing else is known about the feature -- we're curious if we can use that USB mic we got for karaoke, and we're sure you have burning questions of your own, but Nintendo's clearly going to debut this feature and the related hardware in its own sweet time.[Via Joystiq]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: [Link]

Sling Media’s Clip+Sling strides into beta, release looks imminent

October 6, 2008 – 9:56 am
Filed under: Home Entertainment, Portable Video Sling Media has a history of not disappointing, and while we were admittedly bummed to see Clip+Sling omitted from SlingPlayer 2.0, it looks like that one gripe is about to be remedied. If you'll recall, said feature was originally announced way back at the front end of 2007, and now select users are receiving e-mails announcing the launch of a private beta program. The Sling.com portal promises to "give users access to a premier library of content from top TV networks, movie studios, sports leagues and websites," and reportedly, it'll let folks "grab snippets of television content, upload them to the Sling site and create playlists and feeds that can be viewed and subscribed to by others." Is that YouTube / Hulu / Joost / et al. quaking in their boots, or are we just happy it's Friday?Gallery: Sling Media's Clip+Sling strides into beta, release ...
